Barry T. Grant's expertise in estate and personal planning matters allows his clients to successfully solve problems related to estate and succession planning.
"Basically, my job is identifying and solving problems related to estate planning," he explains. "It involves the transfer of wealth from one generation to the next, at the same time solving the business problems that go with it and ensuring family harmony."
Barry is head of Blaney McMurtry LLP's Trusts and Estates Group and a former managing partner of the firm. His work includes personal planning matters (including estate administration), family business planning and cross-border and offshore planning. He solves estate litigation issues such as disputes between beneficiaries, will interpretation and dependants' relief applications.
Barry's work also encompasses the preparation of wills and trusts, powers of attorney, estate administration, domestic contracts and related areas of tax law. He also maintains a general real estate practice, including acquisitions, sales, development, institutional lending and mortgage remedy work.
A director of a number of public and private companies, Barry also serves as a member of the Estate Planning Council of Toronto, In addition, he is a member of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the Canadian Bar Association (Wills and Trusts, Charity and Not-For-Profit Law and Real Estate subsections).
Barry is active in various community and school organizations in addition to his busy law practice. They include The Jesters Club of Canada, Huron University College, Kappa Alpha Alumni Association, Upper Canada College, Trinity College School and the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Havergal College and was Chairman of Havergal’s Planned Giving Committee. He is presently the head of the Panned Giving Committee of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. He is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of Huron University College and on the Executive Committee of Huron College.
