Profile

Ian has recently completed a 6-year term as Managing Partner of the firm and has now returned to full-time practice.

Ian practices in two distinct areas of the law, namely civil litigation and immigration.

The civil litigation area of his practice involves both insurance defence work and commercial litigation. In the insurance defence area, Ian handles a broad variety of cases such as matters involving errors and omissions policies for lawyers, financial advisors, dentists, life insurance agents, actuaries, engineers, environmental consultants, naturopaths, laboratories, police officers and others. He also handles a wide variety of general liability claims, including occupier’s liability cases, malicious prosecution claims, actions against public authorities, including the Government of Ontario, as well as product liability claims. He has also handled directors and officers claims, property claims and has provided coverage opinions. His commercial litigation practice includes breach of contract cases, claims involving real estate developments, shareholder oppression remedies and injunctions.

Ian’s interest in immigration work stems from the fact that he is an immigrant to Canada himself who experienced the many challenges that immigrants face when they seek permanent status in Canada. The focus of his immigration practice is business immigration, including obtaining work permits and permanent status for employees who are needed in Canada, permanent status for professional, entrepreneurial and investor class applicants. Ian has had some considerable success handling difficult cases.

Ian has held seminars for prospective immigrants in South Africa and Sri Lanka. He has written articles in both the civil litigation and immigration areas and has lectured and served as a panel member for both the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Canadian Bar Association in both civil litigation and immigration matters.
