Profile
T. James Cass, a mechanical engineering graduate with expertise in robotics who went on to study logic and reasoning in a university philosophy program before entering law school, is a member of Blaneys' litigation practice.
James practices insurance defence litigation, with an emphasis on coverage disputes – who, and, by extension, which insurer, is responsible for what damages when something goes wrong.
Most of his professional time during the last three years has been devoted to one major matter that has significant coverage implications.
James says an engineering background can be helpful in insurance coverage work. Coverage cases are largely about what caused something to happen. They are often complicated and informed by highly technical reports and analyses.
"My engineering knowledge and vocabulary give me a particular way of thinking and looking at a problem and discerning different cause and effect relationships," James says. "They help me to understand expert reports on such subjects as the design and performance of a machine part and to gain some insight into causation questions at issue."
James has a diversified litigation background. In addition to coverage work, he has provided counsel and service in personal injury, motor vehicle, general liability, commercial and family law matters.
