Profile

John Polyzogopoulos, a partner at Blaney McMurtry, is a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation Group.

John acts for parties in oppression remedy cases where minority shareholders complain about the conduct of majority shareholders.

He also acts for parties in cases involving the breach of non-competition and non-disclosure covenants by former employees, including obtaining emergency injunctive relief to prevent such unfair competition.

John has also been involved in obtaining and opposing various other types of injunctions, including Anton Piller orders that authorize the private search and seizure of documents relevant to a case that are about to be destroyed by the opposing side, and Mareva injunctions that freeze assets that are about to be removed from Ontario to avoid creditors, pending trial.

He also represents litigants in cases of professional negligence involving insurance brokers and lawyers.

John has acted both for and adverse to various levels of government in respect of commercial disputes involving government agencies.

He acts as counsel to various minor hockey associations.

John has also been involved in enforcing foreign judgments and letters of request of foreign courts to compel Ontario residents to be examined under oath in Ontario in respect of foreign proceedings.

He acts for financial institutions in cases where borrowers default on their loans and mortgages, and lessees default on their equipment leases, which often involves exercising power of sale of land and recovering leased equipment.

He also represents financial institutions in defending claims brought against them and in matters relating to forged or materially altered cheques.

Other areas in which John provides counsel include construction, products liability, insolvency and commercial aspects of family law.

John has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario, including acting as lead counsel at trials, including trials by jury, and on appeals before the Ontario Court of Appeal.

A Past President of the Hellenic Canadian Lawyers’ Association, John is fluent in Greek and serves clients in that language as well.
