Profile
Mark G. Lichty’s practice is restricted to insurance and reinsurance matters, emphasizing coverage issues involving commercial property, commercial liability, directors and officers, homeowners and financial services policies.
He also has extensive experience in drafting policies including CGL Forms, Manuscript Liability Forms, Umbrella and Excess policies, Professional Errors & Omissions Endorsements as well as Media and Tech policies. He has been called upon to review underwriting materials and manuals. He is frequently consulted by underwriters prior to policy placement.
Mark’s recent work has included acting as Canadian coverage counsel in respect of a property and CGL claims incident in the United States. He has also given evidence in the United States respecting Canadian Law. He also acts as co-ordinating counsel in respect of coverage matters arising in various Canadian provinces.
Mark is rated by Lexpert, a leading Canadian legal directory, as one of the most frequently recommended legal practitioners in the Commercial Insurance category. He is profiled in the Best Lawyers in Canada Directory as one of Canada’s leading insurance counsel. He is also listed in the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers in the insurance/reinsurance section, and the Experts Guide to the World’s Leading Insurance & Reinsurance Lawyers. In 2005 he was elected to the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
Mark is known for his ability to stay at the cutting edge in an area of law undergoing rapid change. “Coverage law is a rapid growth area within insurance litigation. There’s jurisprudence released on almost a daily basis that can impact the rights and obligations of policy holders and insurers. That’s what makes it exciting. I tend to receive regular calls from clients because there’s potential for significant change almost every day.”
He is widely sought as a lecturer and writer on insurance coverage topics. Mark has spoken to numerous educational organizations, client groups and service providers including The Law Society of Upper Canada, Osgoode Hall Law School, the Defense Research Institute, the Insurance Institute of Ontario and The Canadian Institute. He has published in peer reviewed journals. Mark is a co-author of “Annotated Commercial General Liability Policy,” a leading Canadian insurance coverage text, which is updated annually.
