Profile

Michele Hecke, who was admitted to Blaney McMurtry partnership in January 2003, is a commercial litigator and a member of the firm's Architectural/Construction/ Engineering Services (ACES) Group.

"The construction side of my practice often deals with resolving payment disputes. I am fortunate to have represented the full range of parties typically involved in a construction project," she says, "from owners and lending institutions, to general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and design professionals."

"I particularly enjoy acting on complex project litigation. A number of the matters in which I am involved arise out of large, multi-party construction."

"I also have experience with contract negotiation and drafting. The goal is to pre-empt disputes if possible. If that can't be achieved, my focus is to resolve the problem as quickly and cost effectively as possible."

In her commercial litigation practice, Michele provides advice in a range of contract disputes. She acts for financial institutions in lender negligence and breach of duty claims, as well as representing lawyers, brokers, accountants and other professionals in liability matters.

Michele is a speaker at a number of industry organizations including the Toronto Construction Association and the Canadian Construction Association, as well as professional bodies such as the Ontario Bar Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada. Like her ACES colleagues, she is active in construction industry organizations, including the Business Practice Committee of the Consulting Engineers of Ontario and the National Association of Women in Construction.

Born and raised in Peterborough, Ontario, Michele has a degree in economics and political science from Trent University as well as an LL.B from the University of Western Ontario. She joined Blaney McMurtry LLP as an articling student and returned after her call to the bar in 1995.
