Profile

Bob brings a great deal of legal experience to his real estate, estates and trust practice. He was admitted to the partnership of Blaney McMurtry LLP in 1976 and held the position of Managing Partner for 13 years beginning in 1985.

His experience coupled with a practical business sense developed over his years as managing partner, along with formidable negotiation and people skills, bring a rare combination of talents to his clients' business interests.

Real estate dealings are a significant part of Bob's practice and he's acted for major commercial real estate investors on the acquisition and sale of apartment buildings, shopping plazas, development sites, and other significant real property. Recently, he has also acted on behalf of a number of major financial institutions in funding very large real estate based financings.

His estates and trusts practice includes estate planning (including advising on and preparation of wills, powers of attorney and other complementary documents), charitable giving, estate administration, acting as an estate trustee, succession planning and family trusts.

Bob is also widely recognized in Toronto for his charitable service to the community. He was Chair of the City of Toronto United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater Toronto, Lawyers' Division, and Vice-Chair of its Major Gifts Division and Chair of the Pledge Redemption Committee. He is actively involved in United Way, Israel Bonds, a past president of his Synagogue, and sits on the board of the Baycrest Hospital Foundation and on the Professional Advisory Committee of the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto in addition to chairing a number of fund-raising campaigns raising several millions of dollars. Bob and his wife Marilyn were the 2002 honorees of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism for their contributions to conservative Judaism.

Away from his legal and charitable activities, he is also a gifted sculptor and he has exhibited in several shows.

Bob says serving clients and serving the community are part and parcel of what he is. "Serving clients, serving the community – we're part of a service industry and both give me a great deal of satisfaction," he says. "I can't separate public service and legal work one from the other. It all becomes very integrated."
