Profile

A seasoned commercial litigator with extensive courtroom and negotiation experience, Robert Muir represents a variety of clients involved with construction, design and financing of projects. His practice also includes mortgage enforcement and banking-related and securities litigation.

He has successfully handled dispute resolution on behalf of clients such as owners, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, architects and other design professionals. Clients also include mortgage lenders, receivers and trustees.

"A lawyer's primary objective should be to assist the client in arriving at a resolution of his or her dispute as quickly and inexpensively as possible, " says Rob, a partner in Blaney McMurtry LLP.

His practice also focuses on insolvency work and he's acted on behalf of trustees, receivers, creditors and others arising from the bankruptcy of constructed-related businesses. Rob also serves mortgage lenders and secured creditors, dealing often with construction-related default financing.

Clients have also come to rely on his expertise in drafting and negotiating construction-related contracts and in dealing with such issues as construction liens, scheduling, payment terms and issues related to workplace safety.

Within Blaneys, Rob is involved in the Architectural/Construction/Engineering Services group (ACES), head of the Student program and a member of the Associate and Student Affairs Committee.

Rob is an active member of the Ontario and Canadian Bar Associations. He currently serves on the executives of both the Law Practice Management and Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Sections of the Ontario Bar Association. As of August 2006, Rob is also the immediate past Chair of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Conference of the Canadian Bar Association.

A native of Halifax, Rob studied history and economics at Carleton University in Ottawa and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1988. Since joining Blaney McMurtry in 1990, he has written and lectured extensively on construction topics and other commercial litigation practice issues and procedures.
