Profile

James Edney is a member of the firm’s Personal Services Group, focusing on Family Law. He has extensive experience in dealing with all aspects of family law with a particular emphasis on advocacy in the trial division and before private arbitrators in the voluntary Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process. Jim's litigation experience encompasses all areas of family law, including:

  • contested divorces;
  • property, financial and support issues arising from marriage breakdown; 
  • custody and access issues; 
  • property, financial and support issues between unmarried (common law) spouses; and 
  • complex valuation and income determination issues under the Divorce Act and Family Law Act.

Jim has represented clients in family law matters in all levels of Court in Ontario.

Extensive experience has also been demonstrated in ADR including the conduct of mediations, arbitrations, and mediation arbitration (a hybrid form of ADR which is common in family law) and negotiation of settlements out of court. Jim is fully qualified to conduct these proceedings, having taken the necessary training in Family Law Arbitration, Family Law Mediation and Screening for Domestic Violence. Joint retainers are welcomed to provide these services to separating/ divorcing couples.

With extensive experience in advocacy Jim has the skill and experience to ensure that out of court negotiation of separation agreements and other domestic contracts are handled properly and efficiently - in order to bring family law matters to a timely conclusion.

Jim is a former trustee of the Metro Toronto Lawyers Association.
