Blaneys’ lawyer Ralph Cuervo-Lorens was successful before the Assessment Review Board on a challenge of property tax assessment for an 11 acre industrial property on the basis of extensive contamination. Ralph was successful in having the assessed property value reduced by 68% for the years 2009 to 2016 resulting in tax savings for the client of over a million dollars (which savings will continue beyond those tax years until the contamination is remediated). He also negotiated the ability to seek a further reduction in value if the contamination worsens in the future. The take-away: any client with contaminated land should consider taking a run at their property tax assessment.
